Reconnecting
Derrick is coming into town this weekend (yeah!) for some as yet undetermined period of time. Yesterday I was talking to my MIL and mentioned to her we probably wouldn't call Saturday night to let them know Derrick was in because his flight gets in at 11 and they'll already be asleep. So, I said I'd call Sunday morning. My MIL said, "Oh, not too early though. I know you need to, uh, reconnect as a family."

Derrick's newest creation
Derrick made himself a cabinet for his hand tools. It came together impressively fast and and looks like it's going to be sturdy and functional.

It's 36 inches on each side, meaning it opens up to be 72 inches of storage space.

Since we have a small, curious child who is interested in shiny, pointy things, Derrick put a lock on the cabinet. There's just one problem. See it?

How about now?

Consolidation craziness
Ever since moving out here my husband has been busily consolidating our belongings, particularly in the kitchen (it being probably the most crowded room in our house). We both enjoy cooking, so it's not really a surprise that we both have expansive collections of kitchen utensils, pots and pans, and spices. Most of our spices were combined in a single, fragrant evening, and our pots and pans and utensils are either sharing space, or waiting for the next yard sale. Between the two of us we also had three rolls of aluminum foil. I'm not sure why two of us had three rolls of aluminum foil. The consolidation bug took hold of Derrick and he decided to try turning those three rolls into a single roll, producing this:

Fortunately, he hasn't figured out yet that glad wrap and saran wrap are really the same thing.

Aliens abducted my husband
I think that my husband has been abducted by aliens and a near identical clone left in his place. I think I need to check and make sure this Derrick has a belly-button and has the same fingerprints as the one I know and love.
What, you may ask, makes me think my husband has been replaced by a dopleganger? This weekend he suggested I get pregnant. Seriously. He sounded surprisingly earnest in his suggestion, and I'm strangely excited by the prospect of having a child. I don't know, maybe it's time, though intellectually grad school doesn't seem like the best time to start a family.
I think he really just wants an excuse to be with me--he's pretty obviously done with the whole long-distance relationship thing. I whole-heartedly agree that it's time to quit living apart, I'm just a little surprised he'd suggest pregnancy would be a good way to go about ending this particular situation.
Definitely aliens.
